The Indian Navy has taken delivery of ‘Mahendragiri’, an advanced stealth frigate built under the prestigious Project 17A programme, marking another milestone in India’s indigenous warship construction efforts.
Constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, ‘Mahendragiri’ is the seventh and final ship of the Project 17A series. The project is a follow-on to the earlier Project 17 programme and represents a significant technological leap in naval design and capability.
Named after a mountain peak in Odisha, the frigate reflects India’s tradition of naming warships after geographical features of national importance. It incorporates advanced stealth features, reducing radar cross-section and enhancing survivability in modern combat scenarios.
‘Mahendragiri’ is equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including advanced radar systems, surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. The ship is designed to undertake a wide spectrum of operations, from blue-water missions to coastal defence.
Project 17A warships are notable for their high indigenous content, aligned with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The use of modular construction techniques has also reduced build time and improved efficiency.
With the induction of ‘Mahendragiri’, the Indian Navy further strengthens its combat readiness and maritime security capabilities in the strategically vital Indo-Pacific region.
