Kamarajar Port has become India’s second major port to achieve an 18-metre draft capability, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the country’s maritime infrastructure and enhancing its global trade competitiveness.
The enhanced draft enables the port to accommodate larger cargo vessels with higher load capacities, improving operational efficiency and reducing logistics costs. The development is expected to increase cargo handling capacity, attract more mainline vessels and strengthen India's position in global shipping and maritime trade.
The upgraded infrastructure will facilitate faster turnaround of ships, improve supply chain efficiency and support the growing demand for handling bulk cargo and container traffic. It also aligns with the Government’s vision of modernising port infrastructure and promoting port-led economic development.
The achievement is expected to boost the port’s competitiveness as a key maritime gateway on India’s east coast, contributing to increased trade, improved connectivity and economic growth while supporting the objectives of the country's maritime sector development initiatives.
