Coal India Limited (CIL) has recorded a sharp recovery in coal production and supplies to the power sector as rainfall recedes across key mining regions, easing operational and transportation disruptions. CIL’s average daily coal production rose 35%, from around 1.36 million tonnes (MT) during the first three rain-affected days of September to approximately 1.83 MT on September 6, 2026.
The recovery has also translated into stronger supplies to thermal power plants. Average daily coal dispatches to the power sector increased 24%, rising from around 1.37 MT to 1.70 MT over the same period. The improvement has been supported by better mining conditions, restoration of affected transportation routes and the deployment of additional resources. Overburden removal—an important indicator of future production capacity—more than doubled from 2.5 million cubic metres to 5.1 million cubic metres per day.
With rainfall easing, CIL is also prioritising supplies to critical power plants and strengthening coal transportation routes. The improving trend is expected to help power plants rebuild inventories and move coal supplies closer to pre-monsoon levels.
The recovery comes at a crucial time as India continues to maintain high electricity demand and thermal power remains central to meeting the country’s energy needs.
