The National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR), implemented by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, has helped a 40-year-old man from Peddapalli district of Telangana overcome alcohol addiction and rebuild his life with dignity.  Ramesh Kumar (name changed) had been struggling with alcohol dependence since his early adulthood. Influenced by peer pressure and negative social surroundings, his drinking gradually developed into addiction, adversely affecting his health, family relationships, behaviour and professional life.

Over time, he experienced emotional distress, withdrew from social activities and faced difficulties in maintaining financial and employment stability. However, with the support of his family and his willingness to seek treatment, he took an important step towards recovery.

A major turning point came through the NAPDDR Scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. With assistance from the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), operated by Prakriti Environment Society in Peddapalli, Telangana, Ramesh received comprehensive de-addiction treatment and rehabilitation services.

The treatment included medical supervision, individual and family counselling, group therapy, motivational enhancement, relapse prevention and regular follow-up sessions. He also received vocational guidance, medical intervention and support for social reintegration.

The structured rehabilitation programme helped him develop healthier coping mechanisms, regain self-confidence and address the emotional and psychological challenges associated with addiction. The active participation of his family and continuous counselling further strengthened his recovery journey.

Today, Ramesh has successfully overcome alcohol dependence and is leading a sober life. He is regularly employed and earns approximately ₹12,000–₹15,000 per month. His improved health, emotional well-being and financial stability have also brought positive changes to his family life.
