The Indian Navy is set to commission ‘Nipun’, the second Diving Support Vessel (DSV) of the indigenous Nistar-class, on August 31, 2026, at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. The induction will significantly strengthen the Navy’s deep-sea diving and underwater support capabilities.
Indigenously designed and constructed by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, Nipun represents another major milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defence shipbuilding. The vessel was delivered to the Indian Navy on July 30, 2026, after completing an extensive programme of outfitting and trials.
Nipun is a specialised platform designed to support a wide range of diving and underwater operations. Equipped with modern diving systems and underwater intervention capabilities, the vessel will enable sustained support to divers operating in demanding maritime conditions.
The commissioning of Nipun will enhance the Indian Navy’s ability to undertake deep-sea diving, underwater intervention, submarine rescue and other specialised underwater missions across India’s maritime areas of interest. It also highlights the growing capabilities of India’s indigenous defence shipbuilding ecosystem.
The induction of the second Nistar-class DSV further reinforces the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and strengthens India’s preparedness for complex underwater operations and maritime security challenges.
