India has taken a significant step in its artificial intelligence journey with the launch of Varya, an indigenous AI-powered video story generation model developed by startup Avataar AI under the IndiaAI Mission ecosystem. The model aims to deliver high-quality AI-generated videos at a fraction of the cost of existing global solutions, while being better aligned with Indian cultural and linguistic contexts.
Speaking at the launch, Electronics and IT Secretary S. Krishnan said that Varya demonstrates India’s growing capability to develop advanced foundational AI models domestically and reflects the country’s commitment to technological self-reliance in the AI sector.
According to the developers, Varya has been designed with a focus on efficiency and affordability rather than sheer model size. The platform is expected to significantly reduce the cost of AI-driven video creation, making advanced video generation accessible to content creators, educators, businesses, and media organizations. Reports indicate that users can generate lengthy AI videos at substantially lower costs compared to many international offerings.
The launch also highlights the broader progress of the IndiaAI Mission, which has supported the development of multiple indigenous foundational AI models. Government officials noted that startups backed by the initiative have already created around 20 foundational AI models, with several now publicly available.
Varya is expected to strengthen India’s sovereign AI ecosystem by providing a homegrown solution for video storytelling and content generation, supporting the government’s vision of building AI technologies that are affordable, accessible, and tailored to Indian requirements.
