India’s agricultural exports have received a boost with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, facilitating the export of 1.3 metric tonnes (MT) of Sinduri variety pomegranates from Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The export consignment comprised 650 boxes weighing 2 kg each and was handled by Uttar Pradesh-based Amama Exports. The initiative connects local farmers and the Bhuntar Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) with international markets, creating new opportunities for Himachal Pradesh’s horticultural sector.
The pomegranates were procured directly from local farmers and the Bhuntar FPO, which is associated with approximately 600 farmers. The Kullu district horticulture administration supported the initiative by facilitating procurement and coordination.
The Sinduri variety is among the pomegranate varieties cultivated in Himachal Pradesh, alongside Bhagwa and Kandhari. Known for its attractive red skin, juicy arils and distinctive sweet-tart flavour, Sinduri pomegranates have promising potential in international fresh-fruit markets.
One of the significant outcomes of this export initiative is the improved price realisation for participating farmers. According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the export enabled farmers to achieve 50 per cent higher price realisation compared with the prevailing domestic market benchmark.
The initiative highlights the importance of direct procurement, collective participation through FPOs and stronger coordination between farmers, exporters and government agencies in expanding agricultural exports.
