The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the export of a 1 metric tonne (MT) consignment of GI-tagged Gulbarga Tur Dal from Karnataka to the Maldives, marking a step towards expanding international markets for India’s region-specific agricultural products. The consignment was flagged off on September 24, 2026.

A key feature of the export-linked value chain is improved price realisation for farmers. According to APEDA, while the prevailing market price is ₹60 per kg, farmer realisation through the export-linked channel is ₹82 per kg, representing more than 30 per cent higher realisation. The initiative also provides Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) greater opportunities to participate in export-oriented value chains.

The consignment has been exported by M/s Silken Global Exports and Imports, Mysuru, through its FPO-led brand and will be transported to the Maldives by sea. The initiative is expected to create stronger linkages between producers and international markets and potentially pave the way for regular shipments of Gulbarga Tur Dal to the Maldives.

Associated with the Kalaburagi region of Karnataka, Gulbarga Tur Dal received its Geographical Indication (GI) registration in 2019. The product is recognised for its distinctive taste and quality and forms an important part of the region’s agricultural identity and economy. Kalaburagi is also one of Karnataka’s major centres of tur cultivation.

APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev highlighted the importance of taking India’s GI-tagged agricultural products to global markets and developing stronger market linkages for farmers. The export to the Maldives provides an opportunity to strengthen the international identity of Gulbarga Tur Dal while opening avenues for further market expansion.

The initiative is part of APEDA’s efforts to facilitate exports of GI-tagged and other value-added agricultural products. It also highlights the potential of FPO-led brands and organised export channels to connect region-specific Indian agricultural products with consumers in international markets.
