For Sandeep, a 33-year-old from Assam, the journey from substance dependence to recovery has opened a new chapter marked by restored family relationships, greater financial stability and renewed purpose. Support from the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA) in Hailakandi helped him work towards recovery and return to productive employment.

Sandeep had studied up to Class 9 before moving to Guwahati to stay with his aunt and look for work. After learning to drive, he began earning a livelihood. However, substance use that started under peer influence gradually developed into dependency, affecting his health, employment, finances and relationships. His family continued to encourage him to seek help and recover.

On September 6, 2025, Sandeep received support through the IRCA run by South Borbond Gram Unnayan Samity in Hailakandi. The centre provided medical care, psychological and family counselling, rehabilitation assistance, and motivational and behavioural guidance. Group activities and life-skills support also helped him establish healthier routines and reconnect with others.

Following treatment, Sandeep made progress in his recovery and began rebuilding his relationship with his family. He also moved towards financial independence by returning to work. He is now employed as a multi-tasking staff member at the same IRCA, giving him an opportunity to contribute to the centre that supported his recovery.

The IRCA approach focuses on more than treatment alone. Such centres provide integrated rehabilitation services aimed at helping people overcome substance dependence while improving social and economic reintegration through counselling, family support and rehabilitation measures.

Sandeep’s experience illustrates how access to professional rehabilitation, continued family encouragement and opportunities for meaningful employment can support a person’s return to family and community life. His journey from dependence to recovery and employment reflects the broader objective of rehabilitation: helping individuals rebuild their lives with dignity and greater self-reliance.
