Financial constraints that once made doctoral studies difficult for Ashish Kumar Singh, a 29-year-old scholar from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, have been eased with support under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC). The fellowship has enabled him to continue his Ph.D. research in Political Science with greater financial stability and focus.
Ashish has been receiving NFSC support since April 2024. Before receiving the fellowship, he depended on his family to meet education and living expenses, including tuition, books, accommodation, internet access and research-related costs. Limited financial resources also affected his access to research materials and academic activities.
Under the fellowship, Ashish receives ₹44,400 per month for 26 months, including fellowship and House Rent Allowance, along with contingency support. The assistance has helped him purchase academic books, access online resources, participate in seminars and conferences, and meet research and day-to-day expenses.
Ashish said that the NFSC fellowship has reduced his financial stress and helped him concentrate on his Ph.D. research. The support has also reduced the financial burden on his family while strengthening his independence and confidence as he works towards completing his doctoral studies.
With greater financial stability, Ashish is now able to devote more time to his research and prepare for future opportunities in education and public service. After completing his doctorate, he hopes to join a government institution as an Assistant Professor and is also interested in competitive examinations, including those conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission.
