Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) under the Ministry of Coal, has emerged as a key growth driver of Coal India by registering impressive growth in coal production, offtake and overburden removal during the financial year 2026–27.
During April–October 2026, WCL became the only subsidiary of Coal India to surpass its targets across all three major operational parameters. The company achieved 102.47% of its coal production target, 108.82% of its offtake target and 104.56% of its overburden removal target.

The company recorded particularly strong performance in October 2026, with coal production reaching 5.93 million tonnes (MT), compared to 3.60 MT during the corresponding month last year, registering a growth of 64.87%. Coal offtake also increased by 50.16% to 6.67 MT against 4.44 MT in October 2025.

Another major achievement was the substantial reduction in pithead coal stocks. WCL brought down its coal stock from 13.034 MT on April 1, 2026, to 4.44 MT on October 31, 2026, liquidating approximately 66% of its opening stock. Improved coordination with the Railways also helped increase rake loading to 6,146 during April–October, compared to 4,402 during the corresponding period last year.
The company’s operational performance has been supported by intensive mine-level monitoring, regular reviews, improved transportation infrastructure and close coordination with the Railways, State Governments and other stakeholders. Adoption of modern mining technologies, including Surface Miners and Continuous Miners, has further contributed to operational efficiency and productivity.
