The Suryakiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) of the Indian Air Force took to the skies over Meerut for the first time on September 19 and 20, captivating spectators with a series of high-precision aerial manoeuvres. More than one lakh people, including students, NCC cadets and NSS volunteers, witnessed the two-day display.
The aerial show featured nine Hawk Mk 132 aircraft, which performed a range of intricate formations and manoeuvres, including loops, barrel rolls, inverted flying and the iconic DNA formation. The aircraft, licence-manufactured in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, demonstrated the team’s precision, coordination and flying skills.
A special feature of the display was the use of indigenously developed smoke pods capable of producing saffron, white and green smoke. The modification, developed at the Indian Air Force’s Base Repair Depot in Nashik, enabled the aircraft to create the colours of the national flag in the sky.
The event also had a strong local connection, with three members of the SKAT team, including two aerobatic pilots, hailing from Meerut. Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth witnessed the display on September 20 and highlighted the discipline, precision, teamwork and professionalism demonstrated by the team.
Established in 1996, SKAT has completed more than 800 air displays in India and abroad over its three-decade journey. The team also serves as an outreach platform, giving young people an opportunity to witness the capabilities and professionalism of the Indian Air Force and encouraging interest in careers in the Armed Forces.
