The National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme is playing an important role in enabling students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education and advanced research by providing financial assistance and reducing economic barriers. One such success story is that of Mahendra Kumar (name changed), a 40-year-old resident of Udaipur, Rajasthan, who pursued his academic aspirations with support under the NFSC Scheme.
Before receiving assistance, Mahendra faced financial difficulties that created challenges in continuing his higher education. Despite these constraints, he remained determined to pursue a Ph.D. and contribute to the country’s research and knowledge base.
His journey received significant support in December 2020, when he began availing benefits under the NFSC Scheme. The assistance included fellowship support, House Rent Allowance (HRA) and contingency grants. The total financial assistance received by him amounted to ₹24 lakh.
The financial support helped Mahendra manage expenses associated with his doctoral studies, reduced the economic burden and enabled him to devote greater attention to research and academic responsibilities.
According to Mahendra, the fellowship provided substantial support in pursuing his doctoral studies and achieving his academic objectives. It also strengthened his confidence and motivation to continue working towards academic excellence.
Although his income remained unchanged, he described the overall impact of the fellowship as positive, highlighting its role in making his research journey more manageable.
Mahendra Kumar’s journey highlights how targeted financial assistance under the NFSC Scheme can help deserving scholars overcome economic challenges, pursue higher education and work towards their academic aspirations.
The initiative reflects the Government of India’s commitment to promoting inclusive education, supporting research excellence and creating opportunities for students from Scheduled Caste communities to contribute to national development.
