Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone in railway safety with the successful commissioning of KAVACH Version 4.0 for the first time on South Central Railway (SCR). The latest version has been commissioned over 108 Route Kilometres (RKM) on the Malkajgiri–Kamareddi section of Hyderabad Division, upgrading the existing KAVACH Version 3.2 system.
KAVACH 4.0 incorporates several technological improvements based on operational experience gained from the deployment of Version 3.2 over 1,465 route kilometres on South Central Railway. The upgraded system is designed to provide enhanced safety, improved reliability and more effective train operations, with plans for wider deployment across the Indian Railways network.
Among the key enhancements in KAVACH 4.0 is improved location accuracy, enabling more precise train positioning. The system also provides better information on signal aspects in larger yards, strengthening situational awareness for train operations. In addition, station-to-station communication through Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) and direct interfacing with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems have been incorporated to improve system integration and reliability.
KAVACH is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. It assists loco pilots in maintaining prescribed speed limits and can automatically apply brakes when required. The system is designed to help prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), control train speed in critical situations and support safer train movement, including during adverse weather conditions. KAVACH carries the highest safety certification level, Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4).
Deployment of KAVACH requires a comprehensive technological infrastructure, including station and trackside equipment, RFID tags along the track, telecommunications towers, optical fibre connectivity and locomotive-mounted KAVACH equipment. The commissioning of Version 4.0 on the Malkajgiri–Kamareddi section marks another step in the expansion of advanced indigenous train-protection technology across the Indian railway network.
