India Optel Limited (IOL), a Mini Ratna Category-I Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Department of Defence Production, has launched its indigenous ‘GARUD’ High-Resolution Binoculars for the civil market, marking the company’s entry into civilian optics.
Developed and manufactured by Ordnance Factory, Dehradun, a unit of IOL, GARUD reflects the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, combining indigenous design and manufacturing with IOL’s decades-long expertise in precision optical systems.
The binoculars offer 8x magnification and a 7.6-degree field of view, providing clear observation of distant objects while maintaining a wide viewing perspective. The product also features ±5 diopter adjustment, soft-touch eyecups and an ergonomic grip for comfortable extended use. Its weather-resistant construction is designed for reliable performance in varied outdoor conditions.
Weighing approximately 610 grams, GARUD is designed for portability and can be used for birdwatching, wildlife observation, nature exploration, travel, sports, forestry and marine activities, among other applications.
The binocular platform draws on technology and experience developed through its use by the Defence Forces and Central Armed Police Forces, bringing defence-grade optical expertise to civilian users.
The indigenous product was formally launched at DPSU Bhawan, New Delhi, on August 13, in the presence of Joint Secretary (Land Systems) Dr Garima Bhagat. Senior officials from the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Central Armed Police Forces and the Wildlife Society of India, along with IOL’s board members and senior officers, attended the event.
The launch marks a significant step in IOL’s expansion into the civilian optics market and strengthens India’s efforts to make advanced, domestically developed optical technologies available to a wider range of users.
