In a significant milestone for India’s nuclear energy sector, TEMA India Ltd has commissioned the country’s first private test facility for depleted heavy water upgradation, marking a major step towards self-reliance under the Atma-Nirbhar Bharat initiative.
The state-of-the-art facility has been developed under technology transfer from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and constructed by TEMA’s nuclear vertical, following a procurement order from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). The commissioning ceremony was attended by Rajesh V, Director (Technical) at NPCIL, and K. T. Shenoy, Director, Chemical Engineering Group, BARC.
This development marks the first time that the private sector has established a critical facility for testing depleted heavy water upgradation systems, which were previously restricted to BARC facilities. Officials from NPCIL and BARC commended TEMA India for its technical capabilities, quality standards, and strong partnership in supporting India’s nuclear program.
