Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied indigenously developed special steel for the construction of INS Taragiri, marking a significant step forward in India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
The warship, part of the Indian Navy’s modernisation programme, incorporates specialised steel produced by SAIL that meets stringent quality and strength requirements essential for naval operations. The development underscores the growing capability of domestic industry to support complex defence projects.
Officials said the use of indigenous steel not only reduces dependence on imports but also strengthens the country’s strategic autonomy in critical sectors. The collaboration between defence shipyards and domestic steel producers highlights the success of ongoing efforts to build a robust, self-sufficient defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The project is seen as a major milestone for both Steel Authority of India Limited and India’s broader “Make in India” initiative, showcasing advancements in metallurgical expertise and industrial capability.
