The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, has successfully facilitated the movement of 189.260 metric tonnes of Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC) for the upcoming semiconductor assembly facility in Assam.
The cargo was transported from Diamond Harbour, West Bengal, to Pandu in Guwahati through the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBPR) and National Waterway-2 (Brahmaputra) aboard the IWAI vessel MV Chitrangada. The consignment will subsequently be moved to Morigaon district, where the Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test facility is being established.
The movement of heavy and specialized industrial equipment through inland waterways demonstrates the growing role of river transport as a cost-effective, efficient and environmentally sustainable logistics alternative. The successful operation highlights the enhanced navigational infrastructure and seamless coordination along the Brahmaputra waterway.
National Waterway-2 is emerging as a key logistics artery for the Northeast, enabling the transportation of bulk and project cargo while reducing pressure on road and rail networks. The initiative aligns with the Government’s vision of promoting multimodal connectivity and accelerating industrial development in the region.
The facilitation of ODC movement for the semiconductor sector marks a significant step in strengthening Assam’s industrial ecosystem and reinforcing the Northeast’s integration into India’s expanding electronics and semiconductor manufacturing landscape.
