The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has achieved a significant milestone by enabling more than 7.7 lakh households across India to receive zero electricity bills after installation of rooftop solar systems, the government informed Parliament on Tuesday.

Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso Naik, stated in a Rajya Sabha reply that as of 9 December 2025, a total of 19,45,758 rooftop solar systems have been installed nationwide under the flagship scheme. These systems have so far benefitted 24,35,196 households, of which 7,71,580 households are now reporting zero power bills due to their solar generation meeting their electricity needs.

Launched in February 2024, the scheme aims to install rooftop solar panels on one crore households by FY 2026–27 with a financial outlay of ₹75,021 crore. The initiative provides central financial assistance, subsidies and concessional loans to make rooftop solar affordable and accelerate India’s clean energy transition.

The programme is designed to reduce household electricity costs, promote energy self-reliance, and support India’s broader renewable energy goals.
