The Punjab Agri Export Corporation Ltd. (PEDA) has officially launched a significant new initiative named BHARATI (Boosting Horticulture And Agri-Research Assisted Traceable Initiative). This program is a strategic move aimed at dramatically enhancing the export of agricultural and horticultural products from the state of Punjab, with a strong focus on quality, traceability, and market linkage.
Key Objectives of the BHARATI Initiative
The primary goal of BHARATI is to increase farmer income by connecting them directly to lucrative international markets. The initiative is designed to:
- Enhance Export Competitiveness: Move from traditional bulk commodity exports to high-value, processed, and traceable agricultural products that meet strict international standards.
- Ensure Traceability and Quality: Implement systems to track the journey of produce from the farm to the foreign consumer. This builds trust, ensures food safety, and allows for premium pricing.
- Promote Cluster-Based Farming: Identify and develop specific clusters (geographical concentrations) for high-demand export crops like Kinnow, Basmati Rice, Mangoes, Vegetables, and other horticultural products.
- Integrate Farmers with Global Value Chains: Bridge the gap between Punjab’s farmers and international buyers, exporters, and processors by facilitating direct contracts and ensuring consistent supply.
- Leverage Technology: Use modern agricultural practices, data, and technology to monitor crop health, manage resources, and maintain quality standards throughout the supply chain.
