Ranjit Das, a 31-year-old resident of Nagaon district, Assam, has made a significant journey from substance-related challenges and socio-economic difficulties towards recovery, self-confidence and financial independence with support from the District De-Addiction Centre (DDAC), Nagaon.
Ranjit, whose name has been changed, had studied up to the high school level and faced several challenges, including financial difficulties, limited educational opportunities, unemployment and a lack of vocational training. Social stigma, low self-confidence and limited awareness of available support services further complicated his situation.
Despite these difficulties, Ranjit aspired to overcome his challenges, become self-dependent, support his family financially and lead a healthier and more fulfilling life. With encouragement from his family, he sought appropriate assistance and received support from the DDAC, Nagaon, on March 3, 2026.
The centre provided comprehensive assistance focused on his recovery, psychological well-being and rehabilitation. This included counselling, medical referrals, psychological support, awareness sessions and life-skills education. Family counselling and regular follow-up also helped strengthen the support system needed to sustain his recovery.
With continued support and determination, Ranjit successfully recovered and regained his confidence. He is now self-employed and earns at least ₹10,000 per month. The improvement in his income has contributed to greater financial stability for his family and helped him move closer to his goal of self-reliance.
Ranjit’s journey highlights the important role of District De-Addiction Centres in supporting recovery and helping individuals affected by substance use rebuild their lives. His experience demonstrates how counselling, rehabilitation, family participation and continued encouragement can help individuals regain dignity, develop stable livelihoods and move towards a more secure future.
