Lucknow has become the first city in Uttar Pradesh to achieve the status of a Zero Fresh Waste Dump City, marking a significant milestone in urban waste management and environmental sustainability.

The achievement follows the successful implementation of a comprehensive solid waste management system focused on 100 per cent door-to-door waste collection, source segregation, and scientific processing of municipal waste. With this milestone, no fresh municipal waste is now being dumped at landfill sites in the state capital.

Officials said that wet waste generated in the city is being processed through composting and bio-methanation facilities, while dry waste is recycled or sent for processing through material recovery facilities. Legacy waste at existing dump sites is also being systematically cleared through bio-remediation.

The initiative aligns with the Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban and reflects the state government’s push towards cleaner, greener, and more sustainable cities. Authorities noted that the model adopted by Lucknow could be replicated across other urban centres in Uttar Pradesh.

The development is expected to improve public health, reduce environmental pollution, and enhance the overall quality of urban life.
