The Indian Navy officially commissioned INS Tamal, a stealth guided-missile frigate of the Project 1135.6/Tushil class, marking a major milestone in maritime defense cooperation with Russia।
Key highlights:
Last foreign-built frigate: INS Tamal is the final Indian warship built overseas, carrying approximately 26 % indigenous systems—including BrahMos cruise missiles and HUMSA NG sonar technology.
Advanced capabilities: The 125 m, 3,900 ton vessel supports a wide range of armaments—vertical-launch Shtil‑1 SAMs, dual-role BrahMos anti-ship/land missiles, a 100 mm main gun, AK‑630 CIWS, heavyweight torpedoes, RBU‑6000 ASW rockets, EO/IR sensors, electronic-warfare suite, and Kamov (Ka‑28/31) helicopter operations.
Robust trials & commissioning: Laid down in February 2022 and launched the same year, Tamal underwent sea trials from November 2024 to June 2025, culminating in smooth integration with all its weapon systems.
Strategic Western Fleet asset: Joining the Western Naval Command’s “Sword Arm,” INS Tamal strengthens India’s maritime posture in the Arabian Sea and beyond.
Crew and command: Commanded by Captain Sridhar Tata, accompanied by a complement of ~26 officers and ~250 sailors, the ship motto “Sarvatra Sarvada Vijaya” (“Victory Always, Everywhere”) epitomizes its mission readiness.
Symbol of self-reliance: As the last foreign-built warship for the Navy, Tamal marks a transition toward fully indigenous naval shipbuilding under India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat drive.
