The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has achieved a major milestone by crossing ₹18.4 lakh crore in Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), reinforcing its position as a cornerstone of India’s digital public procurement ecosystem. Launched in 2016, GeM has transformed the way government departments, ministries and public sector units procure goods and services by providing a transparent, efficient and paperless online platform. The steady rise in GMV reflects increased adoption across central and state governments, as well as wider participation from sellers, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and startups.

Officials noted that the platform has helped streamline procurement processes by reducing costs, improving accountability and minimising human intervention, thereby curbing inefficiencies and leakages. The system enables real-time price comparisons, e-bidding and direct purchasing, ensuring value for money in public spending.

A key feature of GeM’s growth has been its inclusivity. A significant share of transactions has come from MSMEs, women entrepreneurs and businesses from smaller towns, supporting the government’s broader goals of economic inclusion and formalization. The platform has also introduced innovative tools such as demand aggregation, reverse auctions and integrated payment systems, further enhancing ease of doing business for both buyers and sellers.

Experts say GeM’s rapid expansion highlights the success of India’s digital governance initiatives, positioning it as a global model for transparent and technology-driven public procurement. The continued scaling of the platform is expected to play a vital role in improving efficiency in government spending and supporting domestic enterprises.
