In a significant step towards realising the Maritime India Vision 2047, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, today inaugurated India’s first comprehensive Digital Twin platform at the V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The cutting-edge platform was launched as part of a larger ₹1,500 crore infrastructure and digital modernisation initiative at the port .

 

The Digital Twin platform creates a high-fidelity, real-time virtual replica of the port’s entire physical infrastructure, operational assets, and maritime ecosystem. By integrating advanced technologies such as IoT sensors, GPS tracking, LiDAR mapping, drone imaging, and CCTV networks, the system continuously mirrors real-time conditions, effectively bridging the physical and digital worlds for enhanced port management .

 

Speaking on the occasion, the Union Minister stated, “The launch of this pioneering Digital Twin platform at V.O. Chidambaranar Port is a testament to the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji. Under his guidance, India’s ports are being transformed into engines of growth, innovation, and global competitiveness. This advanced technology, along with our focus on green hydrogen and expanded infrastructure, will redefine port efficiency, safety, and sustainability, propelling VOC Port into a next-generation maritime hub

 

Chairperson of V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, stated that the implementation of the Digital Twin platform marks an important step in the Port’s modernisation journey. By leveraging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, IoT, and real-time data analytics, the initiative will enhance operational efficiency, improve vessel turnaround time, and strengthen safety and sustainability while aligning the Port with global smart port standards.
