In a significant milestone for India’s steel industry, NMDC Steel Limited (NSL) has become the first company in the country to receive a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) license for Hot Rolled Steel Strip, Sheet, and Plates for Welded Steel Pipe for Pipeline Transportation Systems, under IS 18384:2023. The certification was officially presented during the World Standards Day 2025 celebrations held in Raipur. This recognition positions NMDC Steel as the pioneer in India to manufacture pipeline-grade hot rolled steel conforming to national quality benchmarks.

The BIS certification under IS 18384:2023 sets out the general requirements for hot-rolled steel used in welded steel pipes for pipeline transportation systems. These steels are vital for sectors such as oil and gas, energy, and water infrastructure, where safety and performance standards are critical. Speaking on the achievement, NMDC Steel officials highlighted that this certification marks a major step in enhancing self-reliance in high-grade steel production, aligning with the ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. The license enables NMDC Steel to supply high-quality material for critical pipeline projects across the country, reducing dependence on imported steel.

Industry experts note that this development strengthens India’s capability to meet the growing demand for high-strength pipeline steels used in large-scale infrastructure and energy transmission projects.
