Indian Railways has crossed a major operational milestone by surpassing 1 billion tonnes of freight loading in the ongoing financial year 2025–26, achieving the figure by November 19. This marks one of the earliest times the national transporter has reached the 1-billion-tonne mark within a fiscal year, reflecting sustained growth in freight demand and improved operational efficiencies.
According to official data, total loading has touched 1,020 million tonnes (MT) so far, registering over 3% year-on-year growth. The Railways has also recorded an improvement in daily average loading, now reaching around 4.4 MT per day, compared to approximately 4.2 MT per day in the previous year.
