The first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), ‘Shachi’ (Yard 1280), was launched on Tuesday at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), marking a major step forward in India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding programme.

The vessel is part of a series of advanced offshore patrol vessels being constructed for the Indian Navy under a contract with the Ministry of Defence (India).

Designed with modern features and enhanced endurance, ‘Shachi’ will be capable of undertaking a wide range of missions including maritime surveillance, anti-piracy operations, coastal security, and protection of offshore assets. The vessel incorporates advanced navigation and communication systems, making it suitable for sustained operations in diverse maritime conditions.

The launch of ‘Shachi’ highlights the growing capabilities of India’s domestic shipbuilding industry and reinforces the government’s push towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.

Officials stated that the project will further strengthen the Indian Navy’s operational readiness while promoting indigenous design, technology development, and employment generation in the shipbuilding sector.
