A Bengaluru-based startup, QNu Labs Pvt Ltd, supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the National Quantum Mission (NQM), has successfully demonstrated a 500-kilometre-long quantum-safe communication network — the first of its kind in India.

The network was tested using existing optical fibre lines, with support from the Indian Army’s Southern Command Signals in the Rajasthan sector. The system enables quantum key distribution (QKD) — a technology that uses the principles of quantum physics to create ultra-secure data links that cannot be hacked or intercepted.

This milestone strengthens India’s progress in quantum communication technology and marks a major step towards building secure digital infrastructure for defence and strategic applications.

The project was funded through the I-Hub Quantum Technology Foundation at IISER Pune, under the NQM. QNu Labs’ innovations include quantum encryption devices, random number generators, and enterprise security solutions.

Officials said the achievement highlights India’s growing capabilities in indigenous quantum technology and supports the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ in advanced science and technology.
