In a significant boost to India’s agricultural exports, the first international consignment of rose-scented litchis from Pathankot, Punjab, has been flagged off to Qatar, marking a milestone in the export of exotic and region-specific fruits.
The special variety of litchi, known for its distinct floral aroma and juicy sweetness, has been cultivated in select orchards of Pathankot, an area now emerging as a hub for premium litchi production. The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote India’s unique horticultural products in global markets.
The export is being facilitated under the ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) initiative and supported by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). The consignment was dispatched through a cold chain logistics system to ensure freshness and quality upon arrival in Qatar.
“This export marks a major milestone for Punjab’s farmers, especially those in Pathankot. We are proud to introduce our premium, rose-scented litchis to international consumers,” said a senior APEDA representative. The initiative not only supports farmer income diversification and rural development, but also aligns with India’s strategy to increase agricultural exports to new markets in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
Officials highlighted that the rose-scented litchi has undergone strict quality checks and phytosanitary certification, ensuring it meets international standards. The variety has gained popularity for its longer shelf life and unique taste, setting it apart from traditional litchi variants.
