India launched ‘Surya’, the first indigenous Fleet Support Ship, at Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) in Visakhapatnam, marking a significant milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen indigenous naval shipbuilding capabilities.

The Fleet Support Ship is designed to provide essential logistical support to Indian Navy vessels during extended operations at sea. Such ships play a crucial role in replenishing fuel, provisions, ammunition and other supplies, enabling naval vessels to remain deployed for longer periods without returning to port.

The launch of Surya highlights the growing role of Indian shipyards in designing and building complex naval platforms. The project also reflects the country’s focus on enhancing domestic manufacturing and reducing dependence on foreign sources for critical defence platforms.

The indigenous construction of the Fleet Support Ship is expected to contribute to the development of India’s maritime industrial ecosystem by generating opportunities for domestic shipyards, suppliers and associated industries.

The launch at Visakhapatnam marks another step towards strengthening the Indian Navy’s operational logistics capabilities while advancing the broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence.
