India has reached a landmark 100 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). This marks a dramatic rise from just 2.3 GW in 2014 and underscores the country’s rapid growth in the clean energy manufacturing sector.

The ALMM, introduced in March 2021 with 8.2 GW capacity and 21 listed manufacturers, now boasts 100 manufacturers operating 123 units nationwide. The registry ensures that only quality-certified modules are used in government and government-assisted solar projects.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi hailed the achievement as a major step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and meeting India’s target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the sector, emphasizing the role of domestic manufacturing in achieving energy security and sustainability.

Industry experts attribute the surge to policy support measures such as the PLI scheme, import restrictions on substandard products, and rising domestic demand. The milestone positions India as a significant player in the global solar supply chain, with opportunities for both domestic deployment and exports.
