In a major boost to India’s export of unique agricultural produce, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first-ever air shipment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Indi Lime from Karnataka and Puliyankudi Lime from Tamil Nadu to the United Kingdom.

The consignment marks a significant milestone in promoting India’s region-specific horticultural produce in international markets. The initiative aims to strengthen the export potential of GI-tagged fruits, enhance farmers’ income, and position India as a global supplier of premium-quality limes.

The Indi Lime, known for its distinct aroma and long shelf life, is grown in the dry tracts of Vijayapura district in Karnataka. The Puliyankudi Lime, on the other hand, is prized for its unique taste, juiciness, and high acid content, cultivated in Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu. Both varieties recently received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognizing their unique origin-based qualities.

The export consignment was sourced through farmer-producer organizations (FPOs) under the guidance of APEDA’s regional offices, ensuring strict adherence to international quality and phytosanitary standards. The air shipment was facilitated from Bengaluru International Airport to London, marking a new chapter in the export of niche Indian fruits.

APEDA officials highlighted that this initiative aligns with India’s strategy to expand GI-tagged product exports and promote the “Vocal for Local, Local to Global” vision. It also reflects the government’s commitment to diversifying agri-exports and supporting farmers with international market linkages.

The export of these GI-tagged limes is expected to open new opportunities in the European market, encouraging more FPOs and cooperatives to participate in the export of specialty produce from India.
