Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated India’s first “Make-in-India” 1 MW green hydrogen plant at Deendayal Port Authority, marking a significant milestone in the country’s green energy transition.
Developed entirely with indigenous technology and engineering, the plant is the first of its kind in any Indian port, capable of producing approximately 18 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour, or 140 tonnes annually. The project was completed in a record time of just four months under the Maritime India Vision 2030 initiative.
The hydrogen produced will initially be used to power 11 electric buses and port lighting systems, setting a precedent for clean energy use in port operations. The plant is the first phase of a larger 10 MW green hydrogen facility, the foundation of which was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 26, 2025, in Bhuj.
The electrolysers, central to hydrogen production, were manufactured by Larsen & Toubro at their Hazira facility, and delivered in just three months, reinforcing India’s capability to build hydrogen infrastructure at scale.
