India has once again crossed the landmark of 1 billion tonne (BT) coal production, reinforcing its energy security and industrial growth, the Press Information Bureau said on Friday. According to the Ministry of Coal, the achievement highlights the country’s sustained efforts to enhance domestic coal output and reduce dependence on imports. The milestone reflects improved efficiency, expansion of mining operations, and policy reforms in the coal sector.

State-run miner Coal India Limited played a major role in achieving the target, contributing the bulk of production, along with other public and private sector players. Officials said the record production will help meet rising energy demand, particularly for power generation, which remains heavily dependent on coal. The increased output is expected to ensure a stable fuel supply to thermal power plants and support economic activities across sectors.

The government has undertaken several initiatives, including commercial coal mining, faster environmental clearances, and improved logistics, to boost production and streamline supply chains. The milestone is seen as a key step in strengthening India’s energy security while supporting its growth trajectory, even as the country continues to expand its renewable energy capacity.
