India has commissioned about 8,000 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen production capacity as of February 2026 under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), the government informed Parliament. The mission, launched in 2023, aims to position India as a global hub for production, utilisation, and export of green hydrogen, with a long-term target of 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) annually by 2030.
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, funding allocations under the mission have been steadily rising, with over ₹700 crore earmarked and increasing utilisation across financial years. Competitive bidding has also helped discover green hydrogen supply prices in the range of ₹387–₹397 per kg for refineries operated by major oil PSUs, reflecting early-stage cost trends in the sector.
Experts note that renewable energy accounts for 50–70% of production costs, highlighting the importance of cheaper solar and wind power in scaling up green hydrogen adoption. The commissioning of 8,000 TPA marks an initial but significant step in India’s hydrogen journey, with capacity expected to expand rapidly in the coming years as more projects under the mission come online.
