Indian Railways has commissioned the Made-in-India Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, Kavach 4.0, on the Bajwa (Vadodara)–Ahmedabad rail section in Gujarat, marking a significant step toward enhancing rail safety through indigenous technology.

The upgraded system has been deployed over a 96-km stretch covering 17 stations, making it the first Kavach 4.0-enabled section in Gujarat. Kavach 4.0 is designed to prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and automatically apply brakes in case of overspeeding or unsafe operations.

Developed indigenously under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, Kavach 4.0 meets the Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4) standard, the highest level of safety certification for signalling systems. It also features automatic whistling at level crossings, emergency SOS communication, and protection against head-on and rear-end collisions.

With this commissioning, Indian Railways continues to expand the deployment of Kavach across high-density routes to improve operational safety and reduce dependence on imported safety technologies.
