The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science & Technology (DST) has signed an agreement with Delhi-based NTF Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd. to support the commercialisation of indigenous Type-IV composite CNG cylinders, aimed at strengthening India’s clean mobility ecosystem and domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The project will establish an advanced manufacturing facility for lightweight composite CNG cylinders using technologies such as filament winding, blow moulding and high-pressure testing. The cylinders, designed for clean transportation and emerging energy applications, are up to 75 per cent lighter than conventional steel cylinders, improving vehicle efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.
Developed indigenously by NTF Energy Solutions, the Type-IV cylinders feature corrosion-resistant polymer liners, carbon fibre-reinforced structures and advanced safety mechanisms capable of withstanding burst pressures exceeding 600 bar. The initiative is expected to support import substitution, strengthen India’s clean-energy supply chain and advance the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and sustainable mobility goals.
