In a historic milestone for India’s education sector, Goa has officially achieved 100% functional literacy, becoming the first state in the country where every individual above the age of 7 can read, write, and perform basic arithmetic.
This accomplishment was achieved through the implementation of the ULLAS (Ujjwal Bharat Ujjwal Bhavishya) Nav Bharat Literacy Programme, which targeted adults aged 15 and above who were previously illiterate . The programme involved identifying illiterate individuals, providing them with literacy training, and conducting assessments to certify their literacy. The initiative was carried out at both municipal and panchayat levels, with local bodies playing a crucial role in identifying and educating illiterate residents.
The state’s commitment to achieving full literacy reflects its dedication to educational development and inclusive growth. By attaining 100% literacy, Goa has set a benchmark for other regions in India to follow.
