Coal India Limited (CIL) and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre for Sustainable Energy at the IIT Madras campus.

The collaboration aims to promote research, innovation, and development in sustainable and clean energy technologies, focusing on renewable energy integration, carbon capture, energy efficiency, and sustainable mining practices.

Officials said the partnership will help accelerate India’s transition toward a low-carbon future and support the nation’s commitment to achieving its net-zero targets. The Centre will also facilitate industry–academia collaboration to develop scalable solutions for clean energy production and environmental conservation.

Senior representatives from both Coal India and IIT Madras attended the signing ceremony, highlighting the importance of joint efforts in addressing the challenges of climate change and ensuring energy security for the country.
