In a significant move to boost infrastructure and economic connectivity in the Northeast, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a major project for the widening and improvement of the Kalibor-Numaligarh section of National Highway 715 (NH-715) in Assam. The approved project will see the existing highway transformed into a modern 4-lane configuration, marking a substantial upgrade aimed at enhancing regional logistics, safety, and trade efficiency.

The Kalibor-Numaligarh stretch is a critical infrastructural link in Eastern Assam. The upgrade is strategically aligned with the national Bharatmala Pariyojana and is expected to have a multiplier effect on the local economy.  A key beneficiary of this development will be the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), a major industrial asset in the region. The improved highway will facilitate smoother and more cost-effective transportation of petroleum products, equipment, and raw materials, directly supporting the refinery’s operations and its ongoing expansion plans.

Upon completion, the Kalibor- Numaligarh section will play a pivotal role in regional economic growth, strengthening connectivity between major tourism, industrial and economic centers, boosting tourism to Kaziranga National Park, and opening new avenues for trade and industrial development. The project will also generate approximately 15.42 lakh person-days of direct and 19.19 lakh person-days of indirect employment, and will open new avenues of growth, development and prosperity in surrounding regions.
