April 8th, 2025, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has inaugurated 26 infrastructure projects totaling ₹67.77 crore across six Indian Maritime University (IMU) campuses. He also laid the foundation stone for a ₹13.11 crore Girls’ Hostel-cum-Library building at IMU’s Kochi campus. ​

 

The projects include advanced simulators, solar power plants, enhanced sports facilities, and hostel upgrades at IMU campuses in Chennai, Kolkata, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai Port, and Visakhapatnam. These initiatives aim to enrich academic experiences and campus life, reflecting the government’s commitment to modernizing maritime education and promoting gender inclusion in the sector. ​

 

Minister Sonowal emphasized the importance of these developments, stating they are crucial steps toward transforming India’s maritime education landscape and positioning the nation as a global maritime powerhouse. ​
