On November 8, 2024, India officially handed over two Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC) to Mozambique as part of ongoing capacity-building initiatives within the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This delivery was executed via the Indian Navy’s Magar-class amphibious warfare vessel, INS Gharial, and the ceremony took place at the port of Nacala. Key attendees included the High Commissioner of India in Mozambique, Robert Shetkintong, India’s Defence Adviser at Maputo, Colonel Puneet Attri, and Commander Rajan Chib of INS Gharial. The Permanent Secretary of Mozambique’s Ministry of National Defence, Augusto Casimiro Mueio, accepted the vessels on behalf of his government.
The donated FICs are designed to enhance Mozambique’s maritime security capabilities, particularly in combating terrorism and addressing the ongoing insurgency in the Cabo Delgado province. These water-jet propelled craft can reach speeds of 45 knots with a range of 200 nautical miles, feature bullet-resistant cabins, and can accommodate a crew of five.
This handover is part of a broader commitment from India to strengthen maritime security in the region, having previously donated two similar interceptors in 2019 and early 2022, respectively. India has been recognized as a reliable partner for maritime security, actively collaborating with Mozambique and other IOR nations to counter various maritime challenges, including piracy and illegal fishing.
India’s support extends beyond maritime vessels, having also engaged in humanitarian assistance, such as providing vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic and relief during natural disasters like Cyclone Idai in 201946. Furthermore, ongoing training provisions for the Mozambique armed forces underscore India’s commitment to enhance the operational capabilities of Mozambique’s military forces through on-job training on the gifted vessels.
