On August 1, 2024, Lieutenant General Sadhna Saxena Nair made history by becoming the first woman to hold the position of Director General of Medical Services (Army) in the Indian Army. Her appointment is significant not only for her personal achievements but also as a milestone for women’s representation in the military medical field.
Prior to this prestigious role, Lt Gen Nair was the first woman to serve as the Director General of Hospital Services (Armed Forces), a position she assumed after being promoted to the rank of Air Marshal. Her educational background includes graduating with distinction from the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, and she was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in December 1985. She holds a postgraduate degree in Family Medicine, as well as diplomas in Maternal and Child Health and Health Care Management.
Lt Gen Nair’s achievements have earned her numerous accolades, such as commendations from the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command, and recognition from the President of India in the form of the Vishisht Seva Medal.
