The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed contracts worth ₹858 crore to bolster India’s air defence capabilities and enhance the operational readiness of its maritime surveillance fleet.

The agreements include the procurement and support of the 2K22 Tunguska Air Defence Missile System, a key platform designed to provide short-range protection against aerial threats. The system, known for its combined missile and gun capabilities, plays a crucial role in safeguarding ground formations from enemy aircraft, helicopters, and drones.

In addition, the MoD has finalized a contract for the depot-level inspection and maintenance of the Boeing P-8I Poseidon aircraft. The P-8I fleet, operated by the Indian Navy, is vital for long-range maritime surveillance, anti-submarine warfare, and intelligence gathering across the Indian Ocean Region.

Officials said the contracts aim to ensure higher serviceability and extended operational life of critical defence assets. The move is also expected to strengthen indigenous maintenance capabilities and reduce downtime for frontline platforms.

The development underscores the government’s continued focus on modernising the armed forces and maintaining combat readiness amid evolving security challenges.
